Tracing the Origins of Climate Breakdown: An Analysis by Turner
JMW Turner’s house, Sandycombe Lodge, has been recently affected by extreme weather conditions, reminiscent of the landscapes depicted in his paintings. A new exhibition at the house will showcase Turner’s artworks that capture the changing landscape during Britain’s industrial revolution. The exhibition will highlight Turner as the first British artist of the Anthropocene era, showcasing his unintentional documentation of climate change. Through his paintings, Turner depicted signs of human activity impacting the environment, such as pollution, urbanization, and deforestation. The exhibition will include rarely seen oil paintings and drawings that showcase Turner’s observations of environmental changes. The works on display will provide insight into the early stages of climate and ecological breakdown that Turner witnessed during his travels. The exhibition aims to raise awareness about the environmental challenges we face today and emphasize the importance of taking action to mitigate climate change. “A World of Care: Turner and the Environment” will be on display at Turner’s House in London from 6 July to 27 October.
