Discovery of Ernest Shackleton’s Shipwreck off the Canadian Coast
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) recently announced the discovery of the Quest, the ship on which explorer Ernest Shackleton died, in the Labrador Sea off the coast of Canada. After a six-year expedition, the ship was found by the RCGS’s chief executive John Geiger. The discovery almost didn’t happen due to technical issues, but perseverance paid off. The expedition team, including renowned “wreck-finder” David Mearns, successfully located the Quest. The ship’s discovery sheds light on Shackleton’s Arctic expedition plans and his connection to Canada. Geiger’s fascination with Shackleton’s story has sparked plans for a book and exhibition to share the remarkable tale with the world. This discovery follows the recent find of Shackleton’s famous ship, the Endurance, in the Weddell Sea, showcasing the enduring legacy of one of history’s great explorers.
