40th Anniversary Turner Prize Shortlist Features Claudette Johnson and Pio Abad

Claudette Johnson, a renowned Black British artist known for her powerful figurative art, has been nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize on its 40th anniversary. The other artists on the shortlist include Pio Abad, Jasleen Kaur, and Delaine Le Bas. The Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain will be open from September 25 to February 16, 2025.

Johnson received nominations for her shows “Presence” at The Courtauld Gallery in London and “Drawn Out” at Ortuzar Projects in New York. The judges praised her ability to infuse her subjects with intimacy, empathy, conviviality, and vulnerability.

Pio Abad’s solo exhibition “To Those Sitting in Darkness” at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford earned him a nomination for exploring themes of colonialism and cultural exchange. Jasleen Kaur’s exhibition “Alter Altar” at Tramway in Glasgow was lauded for its evocative combination of sound and sculpture, drawing on her childhood experiences in Glasgow’s Sikh community. Delaine Le Bas was recognized for her presentation “Incipit Vita Nova” at Secession in Vienna, which reflected the cultural history of the Roma people through painted fabrics and theatrical sculptures.

The Turner Prize, known for its provocative nature, will be awarded on December 3. The winner will receive £25,000, with £10,000 awarded to the other shortlisted artists. Previous winners of the prize include Malcolm Morley, Chris Ofili, and Elizabeth Price. The prize exhibition will return to Tate Britain after six years.
