Christie’s Announces Potential Layoffs in Art Market Industry

Christie’s is planning redundancies, as the auction house’s main rival Sotheby’s also prepares for layoffs. According to reports, Christie’s has not begun a collective consultation process, a legal obligation before layoffs in the UK.

Sotheby’s is expected to lay off around 50 people in its London office, with further cuts planned in other locations. Christie’s projected a 26.1% decline in sales between 2022 and 2023, following a successful year in which the auction house landed the Paul Allen collection.

In addition to restructuring, Christie’s is dealing with the aftermath of a cyberattack that crashed its website for more than a week. A hacker group claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to release customer data. One customer has already filed a class-action complaint against Christie’s for failing to protect personal information.
