Exploring Artificial Intelligence in the Latest Venice Exhibition
Josèfa Ntjam’s collateral exhibition at this year’s Venice Biennale challenges Western ways of categorizing the world by blending mythology, marine biology, and science fiction. The exhibition, titled Swell of Spæc(i)es, features AI-generated characters, 3D models of plankton, and scans of West African deities. Ntjam’s work explores the ocean as a space of memory and mythology, challenging Western classification systems. Collaborating with plankton scientists, Ntjam aims to expand AI data sets and disrupt biases in AI technology. The exhibition, designed by Una / Unless, immerses visitors in a futuristic world filled with sonic sculptures and an interactive AI interface. Ntjam’s work aligns with Afrofuturism, emphasizing the importance of research and planetary thinking. LAS Art Foundation’s director describes the project as experimental, fresh, and a merging of past and future. The exhibition runs from April to November at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia.
