Massive Repatriation of €60m Worth of Italian Artefacts from the US
Over 600 pieces of art valued at €60m have been repatriated from the United States to Italy after being illegally excavated or stolen. These works, dating from the 9th century BC to the 2nd century AD, were found in auction houses, galleries, and private collections. The Carabinieri art squad, along with US authorities, collaborated to recover these items, which include archaeological artifacts, antiques, rare coins, and archival materials. Through the use of AI tools like the “Stolen Works Of Art Detection System”, around 105,474 objects worth €264m have been returned in the past year. The Getty Museum’s disputed ancient Greek bronze Victorious Youth remains in Los Angeles as Italy continues to claim ownership.
