Brazil’s National Museum receives donation of over 1,100 fossils, including rare dinosaur remains

The Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro has recently received a significant donation of 1,104 animal and plant fossils to help rebuild its permanent collection following a devastating electrical fire in 2018. The donation, which includes rare dinosaur fossils and previously unstudied specimens, comes from Swiss German collector Burkhard Pohl, founder of Interprospekt Group. The museum is expected to reopen in 2026 with a collection of around 10,000 objects, thanks to ongoing donations and collaborations with research institutions. The reconstruction of the museum, originally built as the residence of the Portuguese royal family in 1808, has faced challenges but is progressing with the support of private and government funding. Upon reopening, the museum plans to showcase digitized versions of lost objects, including the oldest skeleton ever discovered in Latin America.
