Controversial Cancellation Leads German Museum Director to Step Down
The director of the Saarlandmuseum in Saarbrücken, Germany, Andrea Jahn, has decided to step down amid a controversy over a cancelled exhibition of works by artist Candice Breitz. Jahn will depart in April, more than a year before her contract is due to expire. The exhibition was cancelled following comments Breitz made about the conflict in Gaza. Breitz, who is Jewish, expressed support for the Palestinian struggle for basic rights while condemning the actions of Hamas. The decision to cancel the exhibition was made in consultation with Jewish community representatives. Breitz questioned the consultation process and stated that she was not consulted before the cancellation. She also criticized Jahn and the Minister of Culture and Education for their actions. In response, Jahn stated that the exhibition could not proceed due to Breitz’s activist position. Breitz countered by saying that Jahn was aware of her views on social media. The controversy has raised questions about censorship and artistic freedom.
