Asia Week New York Sales Reach $100m, Experiencing 24% Decrease from 2023
This year’s Asia Week New York generated $100.8 million in sales, with participating galleries and auction houses reporting strong results. Despite a 24.1% decrease from last year’s sales, the event saw healthy activity. The Chinese economy’s challenges have been cited as a factor in the lower sales figures. However, specific segments of the market, such as Indian artists, remained strong. Christie’s set a new record for Francis Newton Souza during its South Asian Modern and Contemporary sale, with his painting “The Lovers” fetching $4.8 million. Other Indian Modernists also performed well at the auctions. Additionally, a complete set of Katsushika Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” sold for over $3.5 million, setting a new record for the artist.
