New Exhibition Featuring Black Figuration at National Portrait Gallery London
The National Portrait Gallery in London is hosting a groundbreaking exhibition titled “The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure”, showcasing works by 22 Black artists from the African diaspora. In response to the increased interest in Black artists following the Black Lives Matter movement, the exhibition explores the representation of the Black figure in contemporary art. Curator Ekow Eshun highlights the extraordinary flourishing of Black artistic virtuosity and invites viewers to delve into the depth of exploration and experience within each artwork. The show, which runs from 22 February to 19 May, marks a significant moment in the gallery’s reopening year after a £41 million refurbishment. The title of the exhibition is inspired by James Baldwin and reflects a shift towards Black artists looking “with” rather than “at” the Black figure, emphasizing the importance of perspective and representation in the 21st century.
