Warhol and Basquiat Collaboration Painting Set to Sell for $18m at Sotheby’s in May
An upcoming highlight of the spring auction season at Sotheby’s in New York is a large canvas created as part of the high-profile collaboration between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Expected to set a new record price of around $18 million, the untitled 1984 painting is one of approximately 160 works co-created by the two artists. Despite facing criticism from art critics when unveiled in 1985, their collaborative works have not performed as well at auction compared to individual pieces by either artist. The upcoming auction at Sotheby’s will also feature a portrait by Francis Bacon of his lover George Dyer, estimated to fetch up to $50 million.
