Inigo Philbrick, Former Jailed Art Dealer, Released from Prison

Disgraced art dealer Inigo Philbrick, who pleaded guilty to an $86 million fraud and was sentenced to seven years in prison, has been released. Philbrick’s lawyer confirmed his release, stating that he is now home with his family. His release was reported by various sources, including Vanity Fair and the Daily Mail.

Philbrick, known for his role at White Cube and his own gallery, fell from grace in 2019 due to fraudulent activities in the art market. He misrepresented ownership of artworks, sold shares to multiple investors, and forged documents to maintain his lifestyle. Civil lawsuits piled up against him, leading to his arrest in Vanuatu in 2020.

After pleading guilty to federal wire fraud charges in 2021, Philbrick was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2022. His business partner, Robert Newland, also received a prison sentence for his involvement in the fraud scheme. Philbrick’s case highlighted the risks of conducting high-value art transactions with little transparency and accountability in the art market.
