Eike Schmidt, Former Uffizi Chief, Joins Race for Mayor of Florence
Former Uffizi galleries director Eike Schmidt is running for mayor of Florence in the upcoming June election as part of a right-wing alliance. Schmidt, now the director of Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples, will campaign for the position, despite criticism from the president of the Campania region. If he wins, Schmidt will have to step down from his current post. Schmidt has long had political aspirations and has expressed his vision for the city, focusing on history, culture, beauty, safety, and cleanliness. He also aims to address issues such as the park Le Cascine and manage the effects of tourism. In the past, Schmidt has criticized the current mayor for prioritizing shopkeepers over museums.
