Art Institute of Chicago Battles for Ownership of Egon Schiele Portrait
The Art Institute of Chicago wins legal battle over ownership of Egon Schiele’s “Russian War Prisoner” artwork. The museum acquired the piece in 1966 and successfully defended against claims by heirs of Fritz Grünbaum. However, a new challenge from the New York City District Attorney’s office is pending. Judge ruled that statute of limitations had expired for heirs to bring claims and that the museum acted in good faith. The criminal case continues, with the DA’s office seeking restitution for Grünbaum’s heirs. Stay tuned for updates as the museum prepares to respond to the charges.
