The Broad Museum in Los Angeles Unveils $100M Expansion Plans

The Broad, a museum in downtown Los Angeles, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a $100m expansion project. The new building, designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, will add 55,000 sq. ft of space to the museum, including new gallery spaces, amenities, outdoor courtyards, and a visible storage room. Construction is set to begin next year and is scheduled for completion by the 2028 summer Olympic Games. The museum’s collection has grown since founder Eli Broad’s passing in 2021, with his widow, Edythe Broad, and director Joanne Heyler overseeing its development. The expansion aims to enhance the museum’s commitment to accessibility and offer unique art experiences. The Broad has attracted over 5.5 million visitors since its opening, ranking as the world’s 79th most-visited museum in 2023. The expansion project is part of the Broads’ $500m contribution to the museum and follows other major construction projects in Los Angeles, including the new LACMA building and the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
