This year has seen a surge in Van Gogh exhibitions, with groundbreaking shows taking place in various locations. The most significant among them is “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: His Final Months,” showcasing 47 paintings from his last period before his tragic death. Another notable exhibition, “Van Gogh’s Cypresses,” focused on his time in Provence, featuring iconic works like “Starry Night.”
Other noteworthy shows included “Van Gogh along the Seine,” exploring his Paris period, and exhibitions like “Choosing Vincent” and “Van Gogh and Still Life.” In terms of sales, “Garden in front of the Debray Farm” fetched $23m, while earlier works like “Weaver facing right” and “Head of a Woman” were also sold at auction.
One of the remarkable sales of the year was the lithograph of “Old Man drinking Coffee,” bought by Monique Hageman and loaned to the Van Gogh Museum. Additionally, a stolen Van Gogh painting, “The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring,” was recovered with the help of art detective Arthur Brand.
Renovations of important Van Gogh sites in the Netherlands and new publications like Christopher Lloyd’s “The Drawings of Vincent van Gogh” marked significant developments in Van Gogh research. The donation of works by Dick Wolf to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including “Beach at Scheveningen in Calm Weather,” further enriched the representation of Van Gogh’s art in museum collections.
