Unveiling the Artist: A Series of Anniversary Shows showcasing ‘the man behind the mask’

Belgian artist James Ensor is known for his macabre faces, but a new series of exhibitions in his home country aims to reveal more about “the man behind the mask.” Commemorating the 75th anniversary of Ensor’s death, the year-long season will explore his diverse body of work, spanning genres from Symbolism to Expressionism, Fauvism to Surrealism. The exhibitions will highlight lesser-known aspects of his art.
Born in Ostend in 1860, Ensor studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and co-founded the artists’ group Les Vingt. The anniversary season will feature 11 major exhibitions across Ostend, Antwerp, and Brussels, along with various related events celebrating the artist’s legacy.
One of the key exhibitions, “Rose, Rose, Rose à mes yeux: James Ensor and Still Life in Belgium from 1830 to 1930,” showcases 73 works by Ensor alongside pieces by other Belgian artists. The show presents a thematic arrangement of his works, from early dark paintings to later, more controlled pieces featuring his iconic elements like masks and shells.
Other exhibitions include “Self-Portraits” and “Satire, Parody, Pastiche” at the James Ensor House in Ostend. In Antwerp, the largest show, “In Your Wildest Dreams,” will display Ensor’s work alongside that of artists who influenced him. Moreover, “Cindy Sherman: Anti-Fashion” at Fomu photography museum will explore how the contemporary artist incorporates themes of masking and self-representation.
Ensor’s reputation in Belgium is strong, with King Philippe and Queen Mathilde planning to visit the exhibitions. The diverse nature of his work makes him intriguing, as he defies categorization and draws inspiration from various artistic movements. The organizers hope the anniversary season will introduce Ensor to a wider international audience and solidify his place in European art history.
