The World’s Most Beautiful Bookstore Fighting Misinformation in Portugal

Livraria Lello, known as the world’s most beautiful bookstore, is a popular tourist destination in Porto, Portugal. The Livraria Lello Foundation, located in a renovated 14th-century monastery, is currently hosting an exhibition on misinformation and disinformation. The exhibition explores the impact of false information on society and the upcoming elections worldwide. It aims to educate visitors on how text and images can be manipulated to convey misleading narratives.

The exhibition also features a sound installation by artist Diana Policarpo, showcasing labour songs sung by women. Additionally, visitors can take home newspapers dedicated to figures advocating freedom of speech. Since the opening of the exhibition, the Livraria Lello Foundation has seen an average of 250 visitors daily. The foundation has also collaborated with artist Mike Perry to publish classic dystopian novels with new covers, attracting readers interested in exploring possible futures under authoritarian rule.
