UK Exhibition Showcasing Disabled, Deaf, and Neurodivergent Artists

A new exhibition opening today at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) showcases contemporary works by 15 disabled, neurodiverse, and D/deaf artists, marking a significant milestone in public gallery history.

Entitled “Towards New Worlds”, the exhibition challenges traditional notions of the visual arts by incorporating sounds, smells, and textures into a calming environment. Featured artists include disability activist Jenni Juulia Wallinheimo-Heimonen and multidisciplinary artist Christopher Samuel, who offer thought-provoking and interactive pieces that explore issues of representation and identity.

Curated by Aidan Moesby, the exhibition aims to address the underrepresentation of disabled artists in mainstream galleries and promote a more inclusive art world. By showcasing the unique perspectives and talents of these artists, “Towards New Worlds” seeks to challenge viewers to engage with the work on its own merits, rather than preconceived notions of disability.

The exhibition is a groundbreaking step towards a more diverse and accessible art community, and is a must-see for anyone interested in pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. Visit MIMA from 9 February 2025 to experience this thought-provoking exhibition firsthand.
