Celebrating the Enigmatic Art of Mabel Pryde Nicholson in UK Exhibition
The Grange Gallery in Rottingdean, near Brighton, East Sussex, is hosting a new exhibition dedicated to the late artist Mabel Nicholson (1871-1918). Titled “Prydie: The Life and Art of Mabel Pryde Nicholson”, the showcase aims to shed light on Nicholson’s overlooked contributions to the art world. Nicholson’s paintings, characterized by unposed figures in interiors, exhibit influences from artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Vilhelm Hammershøi. The exhibition, featuring around 30 works from public and private collections, seeks to highlight Nicholson’s late but tragically short-lived career, which ended with her untimely death at the age of 47 during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. The event coincides with a broader reassessment of female artists in British art history, positioning Mabel Nicholson as one of the accomplished women who shaped the early 20th-century art scene. “Prydie: The Art and Life of Mabel Pryde Nicholson” will run at The Grange Gallery from July 20 to August 26.
