Hate Crime Charges Filed Against Activist and Journalist for Vandalism at Brooklyn Museum Leaders’ Residences
Two individuals, including a journalist, have been arrested and charged with hate crimes for an incident in June where pro-Palestine activists sprayed red paint on the homes of the Brooklyn Museum’s director and board members. Taylor Pelton and Samuel Seligson are facing charges related to criminal mischief for their involvement in the vandalism. The activists targeted the homes of museum leaders with spray-painted messages and symbols associated with Hamas. The charges against Seligson, who works as a journalist, have raised concerns about freedom of the press and the First Amendment. Pelton is also facing additional charges for her involvement in driving Seligson and others to the scene of the crime. The vandalism incident occurred following a protest at the Brooklyn Museum over its financial ties to Israel, and it is part of a larger trend of pro-Palestine demonstrations at cultural institutions around the world.
