Unveiling the Legacy of Leonora Carrington: Is She the Next Frida Kahlo?
British Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington’s life and artwork are highlighted in a new exhibition at Newlands House Gallery in Petworth, Sussex. The show, titled “Rebel Visionary,” delves into lesser-known aspects of Carrington’s work, including her later sculpture pieces.
The exhibition is co-organised by Zurich-based Rossogranada and the Leonora Carrington Council, with prices for available works ranging from €8,200 to €180,000. Curated by Joanna Moorhead, the show explores Carrington’s journey from Europe to Mexico, influenced by her tumultuous relationship with Max Ernst.
Featuring a range of Carrington’s works, including sculptures, jewellery, and lithographs, the exhibition sheds light on her exploration of themes such as human-animal interactions and feminism. Pablo Weisz Carrington, her son, emphasizes her modest artistic production and the significance of her record-breaking auction sales.
Carrington’s impact on the art world is further highlighted by her inclusion in the Venice Biennale and the recent sale of her painting “Les Distractions de Dagobert” at Sotheby’s. The exhibition at Newlands House Gallery runs until October 26th and offers a comprehensive look at Carrington’s unique artistic vision.
