US Museums Postpone Kehinde Wiley Exhibitions Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
The Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, is set to reopen in September after a $100m renovation, but a solo exhibition of new paintings by Kehinde Wiley has been postponed indefinitely due to sexual assault allegations against the artist. The exhibition, which was supposed to showcase Wiley’s response to works in the museum’s collection, will no longer be presented when the museum reopens. Additionally, the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Minneapolis Institute of Art have suspended plans to exhibit Wiley’s work in light of the allegations. Wiley has denied the accusations and claimed they are false and defamatory. Despite the controversy, Wiley remains a prominent artist with a full schedule of exhibitions and representation by major galleries. The exhibition at the Joslyn was slated to feature new portraits inspired by Omaha’s diverse communities and the museum’s permanent collection of European art.
