Top Four Exhibitions to Visit at Art Basel



The summer show at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen is a unique exhibition featuring contemporary artists working to create a living organism that changes and transforms. The show includes a variety of artworks such as fog sculptures, plant-based exhibits, and rearranged pictures to create an ever-evolving experience for visitors. The collaborative effort of artists, including Philippe Parreno, Tino Sehgal, and Precious Okoyomon, reflects a desire to explore the artistic process and allow for dynamic and organic changes within the exhibition.

At Kunstmuseum Basel (Gegenwart), the exhibition “When We See Us” showcases the long history of Black figurative painting by artists worldwide. Curated by Tandazani Dhlakama and Koyo Kouoh, the exhibition features over 200 works by 120 artists, shedding light on the rich tradition of Black artists depicting themselves and their communities. Through painting, these artists reclaim their identity and challenge historical narratives around the representation of Black bodies.

Meanwhile, at Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, the exhibition “Science Fiction Design: from Space Age to Metaverse” explores the intersection of science fiction and design over the past century. The exhibition traces the evolution of design through various genres and styles inspired by visions of the future. With a collection of over 100 objects, the exhibition showcases how designers and artists have imagined and created furniture pieces that reflect futuristic themes and concepts.

Lastly, at Kunstmuseum Basel, the exhibition “Dan Flavin: Dedications in Lights” delves into the work of artist Dan Flavin, known for his fluorescent-light sculptures. The exhibition highlights Flavin’s dedications and explores his interest in drawing and works on paper. Through nearly 60 works, including light installations and sketches, the exhibition offers a deeper understanding of Flavin’s artistic practice and influences.
