Quentin Metsys Renaissance masterpiece acquired by Getty for £10.6m

The J. Paul Getty Museum recently acquired a masterpiece by Flemish artist Quentin Metsys, titled “The Madonna of the Cherries,” at a Christie’s auction in London for £10.6m. The painting, dating back to the 1520s, portrays the Virgin and Child embracing with cherries in her hand. Originally believed to be lost in the 17th century, the painting resurfaced in 1920 with various additions, including a green curtain and landscape overpainting. After undergoing extensive conservation, scholars recognized it as Metsys’s prime version, leading to its successful sale at Christie’s. The Getty Museum described the acquisition as a significant addition to its collection and a rare find in the Flemish Renaissance art market. The painting will be displayed at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Additionally, Metsys’s previous auction record was set by “Mary in Prayer” at €1.5m in 2020.
