Boosting the Austin Art Scene: Gallerists Launch Joint Collectors’ Circle
Five contemporary art galleries in Austin, Texas, have joined forces to establish an exclusive collective for local art enthusiasts aimed at promoting the city’s art scene and fostering a tighter-knit community for artists, collectors, and gallery owners.
Known as Friends of Galleries (Fog), this initiative was initiated by the owners of Martha’s Contemporary, Grayduck, Ivester Contemporary, Northern-Southern, and McLennon Pen Co. Each gallery selected a group of top clients—with minimal overlap—to become part of the program, providing members with the opportunity to engage in special events on a quarterly basis.
The group’s founders mentioned in a collective statement that the initial discovery revealed distinct clienteles at each gallery, prompting the realization that many collectors may not have been acquainted with one another. This realization fueled excitement about the potential of bringing like-minded individuals together and cultivating a culture of art collecting.
Events in the pipeline include gallery tours, a printmaking workshop, and even a local birdwatching expedition. As new clients acquire art from any of the participating galleries, they become eligible for nomination to join Fog, with all members receiving matching purple Fog keychains as a symbol of their initiation.
Despite being renowned as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin’s art infrastructure historically lagged behind other major Texas cities like Houston and Dallas, which boast more galleries, museums, and established collector bases. The city’s recent population growth and influx of wealth offer potential for the cultural sector to expand, with a growing number of affluent residents driving demand for arts and culture.
While Austin has yet to attract a significant number of art collectors compared to cities like Dallas and Houston, the presence of a small but dedicated collector base presents opportunities for growth and development within the local art community.
