Reimagine Walker Art Center’s Galleries: A Call for Visitors
The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis recently implemented a major rehang of its permanent collection with the exhibition “This Must Be the Place.” The museum actively sought feedback from the public, leading to new engagement strategies and the inclusion of an interactive space within the exhibition. Visitors were encouraged to participate in discussions and provide feedback on the works on display.
The exhibition explores the concept of “home” through themes like friendship, urban environments, and settlement and displacement. Visitor feedback also influenced the museum’s approach to wall labels and the inclusion of artist biographical information. The Walker aims to maintain flexibility in its reinstallation, allowing for rotations of works and thematic changes.
The public expressed a desire for the museum to engage with critical and topical content, which has informed the approach to future exhibitions. This emphasis on relevancy and engagement reflects the evolving expectations of museum visitors. The exhibition “This Must Be the Place” will be on display at the Walker Art Center until 2029.
