Activists urge Science Museum to expand their actions following Equinor partnership cut



The Science Museum recently ended its sponsorship deal with Equinor, a Norwegian oil firm, due to concerns over the company’s failure to align with the Paris Climate Agreement. However, campaigners are now urging the museum to also cut ties with its other fossil fuel-linked sponsors, such as BP and the Adani Group. Despite dropping Equinor, the Science Museum continues to promote BP, which has been criticized for not meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Critics argue that BP lacks short-term emissions targets that are essential for reducing harm caused by the company’s oil and gas production. The museum defended its sponsorship deal with BP by citing assessments from the Transition Pathway Initiative, but campaigners insist that BP is not on track to meet the necessary emissions cuts. The Science Museum has yet to address questions regarding BP’s ongoing sponsorship. In response to Equinor’s departure, the museum expressed appreciation for their support and encouraged the company to set emissions reduction targets aligned with limiting global warming.
