The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) has recently announced a significant $25 million gift from the Bucksbaum family for the creation of the new Bucksbaum Photography Center. This generous donation will support the museum’s Department of Photography and Media and its collection, marking one of the largest gifts ever received by the AIC for this department in the United States.
Kay Bucksbaum, a longtime AIC trustee, expressed her passion and appreciation for photography and media, emphasizing the importance of investing in the future of the department and its curators. Her late husband, Matthew Bucksbaum, a prominent Chicago real-estate mogul, co-founded General Growth Properties (GGS), which became one of the leading shopping-mall operators in the country.
The Bucksbaum family’s involvement in the AIC extends to John Bucksbaum and his wife, Jackie, who have been members of the Committee on Photography and Media. The AIC’s photography collection features a diverse array of works by acclaimed artists such as Diane Arbus, Dawoud Bey, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, André Kertész, Cindy Sherman, and Alfred Stieglitz, as well as historical photographs of notable figures like Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth.
