The prestigious Barbier-Mueller African and Oceanic Art Collection is set to be auctioned at Christie’s in Paris on 6 March. The auction will focus on the West and Central African core of the collection, which was assembled by Josef Müller in the 1930s. The decision to sell a portion of the collection housed at the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva follows the untimely passing of Thierry Barbier-Mueller, one of the late Monique and Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller’s sons. The auction will feature historic pieces such as a Fang reliquary head, a Fang statue, a “Songye princess,” a Baule mask, an Ambete statue, a twin Baule mask, a Baga snake mask, a Congolese mask, and more. Among the most striking sculptures are a Kongo “howler,” a figure from Easter Island, and pieces from Papua New Guinea. The collection, which originated in 1907 with the purchase of a painting by Ferdinand Hodler, has evolved to include European avant-garde paintings and African masks. Monique Barbier and her husband Jean-Paul Barbier continued to expand the collection with their passion for art.
