Basquiat Paintings Set to Fetch Over $86m at Phillips Auction in May



Phillips will be offering three major Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings this spring from the collection of the late Italian anthropologist Francesco Pellizzi. The auction house estimates the paintings could sell for as much as $86.5m combined. The highlight of the collection is the painting “Untitled (ELMAR)” from 1982, which is expected to fetch between $40m and $60m. Another notable piece is “Untitled (Portrait of a Famous Ballplayer)” from 1981, with an estimated value of $6.5m to $8.5m. Additionally, “Native Carrying Some Guns, Bibles, Amorites on Safari” from 1982 will be offered in Hong Kong with an estimated price of $12m to $18m. These paintings will be on display in New York and Los Angeles before the sales. Basquiat’s “Untitled (ELMAR)” is currently the most valuable lot announced for the May sales in New York. Other notable artworks to be auctioned include pieces by Claude Monet and Francis Bacon.
