Belem welcomes two new museums ahead of Cop30

The 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop30) is scheduled to take place in Belém, the capital of the Amazonian state of Pará. With nearly 20% of the Amazon facing deforestation, various projects are underway to improve Belém’s infrastructure. One recent initiative is the Centro Cultural Bienal das Amazônias (CCBA), which officially opened in May following the successful inaugural Bienal das Amazônias in 2023. The exhibition “Bubuia: Waters as a Source of Imagination and Desire” showcased the work of over 120 artists, including internationally renowned figures like Adriana Varejão and historical artists such as Chico da Silva. The CCBA, housed in a renovated department store, aims to promote the region’s culture through rotating exhibitions and public programs. Supported by companies like Shell and Mercado Livre, the CCBA is a key cultural hub in Belém. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish the Museu das Amazônias, a museum that will provide a comprehensive view of the Amazon rainforest’s history and complexity. This project, set to open in October 2025 as part of the Porto Futuro II development, received funding from various sources, including the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of the Amazon at these exciting new cultural institutions in Belém.
