Blum Gallery Celebrates 30 Years of Japanese Contemporary Art in the US

In 1984, gallerist Tim Blum visited Tokyo and was inspired by the city’s underground art scene. Three decades later, he co-curated a survey of Japanese contemporary art at Blum & Poe gallery to commemorate its 30th anniversary. The exhibition showcases works from 1959 to 2023 by artists associated with the gallery, offering a glimpse into Japanese art history. The show features a range of artworks, from minimalist pieces to immersive digital works. While highlighting the Mono-ha movement, it also includes pieces by iconic artists like Yukinori Yanagi and Takashi Murakami. Despite being thin on Superflat artists, the exhibition pays homage to the gallery’s rich history and contributions to the art world.
