Bonhams Executive Alex Fortescue Passes Away at Age 55

Alex Fortescue, the managing partner of the London-based private equity firm Epiris, passed away last week at the age of 55. He was a board member representing Epiris at Bonhams auction house. His death was confirmed by Epiris in a statement, expressing deep sadness at the loss. Fortescue reportedly died after an incident while cycling and is survived by his wife and three children. Following his passing, Bill Priestly has been appointed as Epiris’s new managing partner.

Epiris acquired Bonhams in 2018, leading to an expansion strategy that included acquiring smaller auction houses like Cornette de Saint Cyr in France, Rasmussen in Denmark, and Skinner in New England. Reports indicated that Epiris was considering the sale of Bonhams for $1bn. Fortescue had expressed excitement about the acquisition at the time, highlighting the strategic investment approach of Epiris Fund II. The fund continues to seek new opportunities for investment and growth in the art market.
