Capturing Kyoto: Photography Festival Showcases Stunning Locations

Kyotographie is a photography festival held in Kyoto, Japan, during the cherry blossom season. The festival features 13 exhibitions in unique locations across the city, such as the Kyoto National Museum and former kimono factories. The emphasis on stagecraft and setting reflects Japanese traditions, creating an immersive experience for visitors. One notable exhibition is Thierry Ardouin’s “Seed Stories” displayed in Nijō Castle’s former kitchens, with a scenography designed by Shinichiro Ogata.

Another exhibition re-imagines Viviane Sassen’s work at a former Parisian printing house, highlighting her use of color and experimentation. The festival also addresses sensitive topics, such as the collaboration between Claudia Andujar and the Yanomami people of Brazil, and the struggle of Iranian women for freedom.

Newcomers to the festival include the Kyocera Museum of Art, hosting an exhibition supported by Kering’s Women in Motion program, featuring Rinko Kawauchi and Tokuko Ushioda. Other exhibitions showcase artists like Birdhead and Eamonn Doyle, pushing the boundaries of photography. The festival also pays tribute to Lucien Clergue, the founder of Rencontres d’Arles, with an exhibition of his works. Kyotographie 2024 runs until May 12 across various venues in Kyoto, Japan.
