Christie’s Modern Evening Sale in NY Generates $346.5m with Warhol Art and Strong Guarantees

Christie’s Modern evening sale exceeded expectations with a solid result of $346.5m. The sale saw a 95% sell-through rate, with only three lots going unsold. Highlights included Andy Warhol’s “Flowers” selling for $30.5m and Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Red Poppy” fetching $14m. The auction also featured works from the collection of Norman and Lyn Lear, including David Hockney’s “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” which sold for $24.5m. Additionally, pieces by artists such as Willem de Kooning, Egon Schiele, and Claude Monet performed well. With ongoing uncertainty in the market, third party guarantees proved to be a crucial financial tool for auction houses. Despite challenges such as a cyberattack on Christie’s website, the sale demonstrated the resilience of the art market.
