The 2025 edition of the Bienal de Arte Paiz has appointed Italian art critic Eugenio Viola as its curator. The biennial will take place in Guatemala City and Antigua from November 2025 to February 2026.
Viola, known for his expertise in performance art and “bodily poetics”, has curated over 100 exhibitions globally, including prominent shows such as “The Abramović Method” in Milan and national pavilions at the Venice Biennale. Currently serving as the artistic director of the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, Viola aims to create a diverse and engaging project that reflects Guatemala’s diverse artistic community.
Established in 1978, the Bienal de Arte Paiz is Central America’s largest contemporary art exhibition and one of the oldest biennials globally. Viola’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the biennial, highlighting the country’s rich artistic heritage and cultural diversity.
