Exploring the Dutch Settlement of New York through Native American Eyes

The Amsterdam Museum in the Netherlands collaborated with the Museum of the City of New York to create an exhibition marking 400 years since Dutch settlers established a colony in what is now New York. Titled “Manahahtáanung or New Amsterdam? The Indigenous Story Behind New York,” the exhibition aims to share the history of New York from an Indigenous perspective. Working closely with representatives from the Lenape people, the exhibition explores the impact of colonization on Native American communities, highlighting their way of life, creation stories, and struggles against violence and cultural erasure. Through a combination of museum objects, storytelling, and contemporary art, the exhibition offers a thought-provoking look at the shared history of Dutch and American cultures. One of the key goals of the exhibition is to spark a dialogue about the need for reconciliation and a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the legacy of colonization and consider the diverse voices that shape our understanding of history.
