Exploring the Renaissance Master’s Final Years at the British Museum Exhibition

The British Museum will be hosting an exhibition this spring titled “Michelangelo: the last decades,” focusing on the final 30 years of the Renaissance master’s life. One of the highlights of the exhibition will be the display of the only complete surviving cartoon by Michelangelo called “Epifania,” which was created between 1550-53. This large-scale preparatory drawing, standing over two meters high, was recently conserved and will be shown to the public for the first time since 2018.

The exhibition aims to shift the spotlight from Michelangelo’s early works to those created in the later years of his life. The cartoon “Epifania” was originally made to assist Michelangelo’s biographer, Ascanio Condivi, in the production of a panel painting. Another work, “The Punishment of Tityus” from 1532, will also be on display at the exhibition, on loan from the Royal Collection.

Curated by Sarah Vowles, the exhibition will explore Michelangelo’s evolution as an artist in his later years, showcasing a variety of works he produced, including “The Last Judgment” and the dome of St Peter’s. The display of Michelangelo’s drawings and paintings offers a unique insight into the artist’s creative process and legacy.
