Federal Judge Blocks Destruction of Land Art Environment in US

A US federal judge has granted a temporary restraining order to block the Des Moines Art Center’s demolition of Mary Miss’ Land art environment, Greenwood Pond: Double Site, in Des Moines, Iowa. Miss sued the art center after it announced the demolition of her outdoor art commission. The judge issued a temporary restraining order, citing insufficient evidence of a meaningful risk of costs or damages if the demolition is delayed. The art center has spent almost $1m on maintenance of Greenwood Pond: Double Site since it was completed in 1996. The environment consists of a curving boardwalk, a shelter, and other structures made of wood and concrete. Despite the art center’s plans to demolish the work, the court’s decision has paused these plans for now.
