French art world figures support Palais de Tokyo amid patron row

Over 100 prominent French art world figures have come together to show their support for the Palais de Tokyo in Paris following Sandra Hegedüs’s decision to withdraw her funding after 15 years. The open letter, signed by individuals such as Chris Dercon and Emma Lavigne, emphasizes the importance of institutions remaining free from external influences. The controversy arose after Hegedüs accused the Palais de Tokyo of promoting programming that aligns with wokeism, anti-capitalism, and pro-Palestine views. In response, Hegedüs stated her decision to step back from the institution due to its perceived political direction. Despite the backlash, Hegedüs maintains her support for artists of all backgrounds and perspectives. The letter highlights the significance of preserving freedom of expression within the art world, with signatories including Sylvain Lizon and Dirk Snauwaert emphasizing the need to protect spaces of artistic creativity.
