French Critics and Curators Urge Centre Pompidou to Remain Open for Five Years
Several prominent figures in the French art world have signed an open letter urging the French government to reconsider the planned closure of the Centre Pompidou in Paris for renovations. The signatories, including curator Nicolas Bourriaud, artist Daniel Buren, and art critic Catherine Millet, are calling for a more prudent approach to ensure the continuity of the institution. Gallerist Daniel Templon, overseeing the letter, emphasizes the importance of maintaining France’s cultural ambitions and public service role in the art sector. The Centre Pompidou is scheduled to close for five years for a €262m renovation, with concerns raised about the impact on the cultural and economic vibrancy of the capital. The French culture ministry defends the decision for a closed-site renovation, citing cost-effectiveness and safety considerations. However, a report by the Cour des comptes highlights the risks of cost overruns and delays in the project.
