Frieze Los Angeles Enhances Approach to Local Art Scene for Fifth Edition

Frieze Los Angeles is celebrating its fifth year in the City of Angels with a new calendar slot and 95 exhibitors showcasing their work under one roof. The fair includes 14 newcomers like Kasmin, Rachel Uffner Gallery, and Petzel. The Focus sector curated by Essence Harden features 12 galleries, with almost half of the exhibitors having a presence in the Los Angeles area. Additionally, international galleries like Lisson Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, Perrotin, and David Zwirner have opened local outposts, showcasing the city’s growing art scene.
Frieze’s director, Christine Messineo, emphasizes the importance of looking beyond blue-chip galleries and supporting emerging local galleries like Emma Fernberger and Babst Gallery. Perrotin, a global gallery, has made a commitment to the Los Angeles market, opening a new location at the former Del Mar Theater with a solo show by artist Izumi Kato.
The art market in Southern California is evolving, with local galleries expanding to different parts of the city, reshuffling the local hierarchy. Galleries like François Ghebaly and Night Gallery are adapting to these changes and participating in events like Frieze Los Angeles to engage with artists, collectors, and the community.
