Ken Griffin Purchases Stegosaurus Skeleton for $45 Million at Sotheby’s

A rare dinosaur skeleton, dubbed Apex, recently sold for a record-breaking $44.6 million at Sotheby’s New York, making it the most valuable fossil ever to be sold at auction. The winning bidder, billionaire hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin, plans to loan the specimen to a US institution. Apex, a 150-million-year-old Stegosaurus, was discovered in Colorado in 2022 and measures 11 feet tall and 27 feet long. The skeleton, consisting of 254 fossilized bones, is in remarkably good condition and has garnered significant interest from experts and collectors alike. Griffin, known for his lavish art purchases, has previously spent large sums on notable works by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Willem de Kooning. The sale of Apex was part of Sotheby’s natural history auction, which also featured meteorites, minerals, fossils, and Neanderthal tools. Thousands of visitors had the opportunity to view Apex on display at Sotheby’s New York space during the auction.
