The Musée du Louvre in Paris has successfully secured the €1.3m needed to acquire Jean Siméon Chardin’s painting, Basket of Wild Strawberries, thanks to a fundraising campaign that garnered contributions from nearly 10,000 individuals. The luxury goods conglomerate LVMH and the Société des Amis du Louvre were among the major donors for this acquisition. The painting, which set a record as the highest price paid at auction for an 18th-century French painting, will be exhibited at various museums in France following its acquisition. The Louvre had previously blocked the export of the painting after it was sold to the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas, ensuring that this valuable artwork remains in France.
