Marcel Breuer’s Modernist Cottage on Cape Cod Sold to Local Trust for Restoration.
After a year of fundraising and negotiation, the Cape Cod Modern House Trust (CCMHT) has acquired Marcel Breuer’s summer house near Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The property will undergo renovations to preserve its original design before becoming a residency for artists, architects, and scholars.
Breuer designed the house in 1948, creating a unique structure that blends Bauhaus principles with American summer cottage traditions. The CCMHT, known for preserving modernist houses in the area, will work on restoring Breuer’s house to its former glory.
The trust’s founder, Peter McMahon, has saved and restored several modernist houses on Cape Cod, offering residency programs and educational opportunities for visitors. Breuer’s house, despite needing repairs, has remained untouched since the architect’s passing in 1981, retaining its original furniture and artwork.
Overall, the acquisition and preservation of Breuer’s house mark a significant achievement for the CCMHT as they continue their mission to safeguard modernist architecture in the region.
