Metropolitan Museum of Art Signs Cultural-Property Agreement and Returns Two Statues to Thailand
On 25 April, the Metropolitan Museum of Art signed a new agreement with the government of Thailand and officially returned two 11th-century metal sculptures. The sculptures, “Standing Shiva” and “Kneeling Female Figure,” are considered valuable masterpieces and rightfully belong to the Kingdom of Thailand. The agreement ensures that any disputes between the museum and Thailand will be settled amicably. These sculptures will be displayed at their new home, the National Museum in Bangkok, after being accompanied by the Met’s curator of South and Southeast Asian art for a special celebration.
