Modernism Takes Over the American South
The American South was long seen as resistant to Modernism, but a new exhibition, “Southern/Modern,” challenges that perception. Featuring over 100 works by southern and northern artists, the show aims to de-exoticize the South and highlight its unique contributions to the Modernist movement. From William H. Johnson’s “Evening” to Elaine de Kooning’s “Black Mountain #6,” the exhibition showcases a diverse range of perspectives on southern life. With works from artists like Carroll Cloar and Jasper Johns, “Southern/Modern” offers a fresh look at the blending of Modernist aesthetics with southern subject matter. Don’t miss this groundbreaking exhibition at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville from January 26 to April 28.
