National ‘Grand Tour’ Unites Australian Art Events

Three premier Australian art events—the Biennale of Sydney, the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, and PHOTO 2024—have teamed up to create the “Art Grand Tour” alongside the Melbourne Art Fair. This multi-city event includes NGV Triennial, Tadao Ando-designed MPavilion, Adelaide Festival, and “Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?” at Art Gallery New South Wales.

The collaborative initiative aims to highlight contemporary art practices and cater to audiences interested in experiencing art across various events and locations. Self-guided itineraries have been created to showcase the best of contemporary art.

International visitors have also shown interest in the Art Grand Tour, with the Biennale of Sydney attracting audiences from over 100 countries since 1973. European curators like Daria de Beauvais have found these events to be a valuable opportunity to engage with the Australian art scene and foster collaborations with local artists.

Léuli Eshrāghi, curator of Indigenous arts at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, views Australia’s biennales as an essential platform for understanding local artists’ practices and addressing dark histories. The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, curated by José da Silva, focuses on exploring the concept of “Inner Sanctum” through the work of 24 Australian artists and poets.

As the inaugural Art Grand Tour unfolds, da Silva emphasizes the rich offerings of each event, inviting audiences to discover art, culture, and vibrant cities bursting with life.
