National Museum Cardiff Chair Urges Government to Increase Bail Out Funding

The Welsh government has provided additional funding to support National Museum Cardiff and the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. The funding will help make necessary repairs and improvements to the National Museum Cardiff, which is facing closure due to a deteriorating building. The funding falls short of the estimated £25m needed for repairs, but will allow for immediate emergency improvements. The Welsh cabinet secretary for culture and social justice emphasized the importance of safeguarding cultural institutions, both large and small, in the face of financial challenges. As a result of budget cuts, Museum Wales is undergoing a voluntary severance scheme to manage costs. The funding will prioritize protecting and preserving cultural institutions, though plans for new initiatives like the National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales may be delayed. Additionally, a contemporary gallery project involving a network of venues across Wales will showcase contemporary art works from Museum Wales and the National Library of Wales.
